The Garman 301 is similar to the garmin forerunner 201.  One similarity is that it can be used as a basic navigator.  It has features that allow you to mark your starting point and then find your current position on the display screen.  It will direct you back to your starting point by displaying the trail on the screen map.  The built in GPS receiver is very accurate and is easy to turn on and off.   Like the 201, the Garmin 301 can be connected to your computer using its USB data port.  Then, Garmin software can be utilized to analyze the data that you have entered and then give you an accurate picture of where you are in your training program.
